Bank of America’s New Royal One Card Bonus Is a Big Win for Cruisers

April 28, 2026 USA Money Saving Team Credit Cards

If you have a Royal Caribbean cruise on your radar, the new Royal One credit card offer from Bank of America is worth a serious look. The issuer just rolled out a welcome bonus that can translate into onboard credit or cruise discounts, and for frequent cruisers, that can feel a lot more useful than a generic points offer.

The timing is interesting too. When these cards were first announced, many travelers wondered whether the rewards would be strong enough to matter. Now that a sizable sign-up bonus is on the table, the cards suddenly look far more competitive for anyone who sails with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, or Silversea.

What the New Royal One Credit Card Bonus Offers

Bank of America is offering two versions of the card, and each one comes with a different welcome bonus. The no annual fee Royal ONE offers 45,000 points after you spend $2,000 within the first 90 days. The Royal ONE Plus offers 70,000 points after you spend $3,000 within the first 90 days.

According to the offer details, those points can be used toward onboard credit or cruise discounts, which makes this a strong fit for travelers who like to reduce the cost of their next sailing. In practical terms, that kind of value can help cover specialty dining, shore excursions, spa treatments, drinks, or even part of the fare itself.

Royal One vs. Royal One Plus: What’s the Difference?

The two cards are designed for different types of cruisers. The standard Royal ONE has no annual fee and gives you priority boarding on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises, plus a $100 anniversary discount if you spend $10,000 in a cardmember year.

Royal ONE Plus carries a $99 annual fee, although one landing page reportedly showed a no annual fee message that conflicts with the terms. It adds priority suite boarding for Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea vacations, priority luggage handling, and a $200 anniversary discount if you spend $20,000 in a cardmember year.

There is also a $120 TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credit every four years, and the card has no foreign transaction fees. For travelers heading overseas or cruising internationally, that combination can be especially appealing.

Why This Cruise Credit Card Bonus Stands Out

Cruise cards are often underwhelming, with weak earnings and modest perks that do not do much to justify a new account. That is what makes this offer different. The bonus is large enough to get real attention, especially if you already cruise with one of the eligible brands.

Onboard credit has a special kind of value because it offsets expenses you would probably already be paying. Instead of earning rewards you may never use, you are getting help with real vacation costs. That makes this one of the more practical travel rewards offers currently available for cruise fans.

How the Earning Rates Work

Beyond the welcome bonus, both cards have earning structures that are fairly straightforward. The Royal ONE earns 3X points on purchases with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Silversea, plus 2X points on grocery, gas, and EV charging.

Royal ONE Plus bumps that up to 4X points on purchases with those cruise lines. It also earns 2X points on grocery, gas, EV charging, air, hotel, and dining, which gives it more value for everyday travel spending.

That broader 2X category on the Plus version matters. If you want a card that can earn outside of cruise bookings too, the higher annual fee may be easier to justify for regular travelers.

Is the Annual Fee Worth It?

Whether the $99 annual fee makes sense depends on how often you cruise and how much you spend. If you sail once a year and spend heavily onboard, the bonus, anniversary discount, and travel perks may quickly offset the fee.

On the other hand, if you only cruise occasionally, the no annual fee Royal ONE may be the safer choice. You still get a meaningful welcome bonus, priority boarding, and elevated earnings on cruise purchases without having to worry about recouping an annual charge.

For travelers who value flexibility, the choice is pretty clear. The standard card offers a lower-risk entry point, while the Plus version is built for people who want stronger rewards and are willing to pay for extra perks.

How to Maximize the Royal One Sign-Up Bonus

If you are targeting the bonus, the first rule is simple: make sure you can hit the spending requirement comfortably. A welcome offer is only a great deal if you are using normal expenses to earn it, not stretching your budget to force it.

It also helps to plan the timing around an actual cruise booking. If you know a sailing is coming up, using the card for deposits, pre-cruise purchases, airfare, and hotel stays can help you reach the threshold faster while stacking value from the bonus and the ongoing rewards.

Smart ways to use the offer

Think about adding the card before your next cruise, then use it for travel-related purchases that already fit your budget. That approach can make the welcome bonus feel like an easy rebate instead of an extra task.

If you cruise often, the Royal ONE Plus could be especially compelling because the higher earning rate and extra benefits may keep paying off after the bonus is earned. If you prefer no annual fee, the base card still delivers a strong enough offer to make it worth considering.

For Royal Caribbean loyalists, this launch finally gives the program a reason to stand out. If your next vacation is likely to be spent at sea, the smartest move may be to compare both versions, look at your expected cruise spending, and choose the card that lines up with how you actually travel.
